forgotten friends and foes...

while in high school i used to think that when the time came to have a reunion it'd be an awesome night of comparisons and contrasts... we'd all look around the room and scope out who got fat, who got hot, who never changed, who still hung out, who got married, etc... the line "so what are you up to these days?" would become a familiar refrain throughout the event environment... all in all, a harmful night of re-hashing and memories of days gone by...

two summers ago, a couple of classmates from my high school decided to put together a night out at a local pub where we could all reunite... we were only a few tender years out of the high school atmosphere, yet it seemed to be a good idea... in the end i spent the night dreading that line of refrain after uttering it like a broken record, and quickly realized exactly why i hadn't seen most of these people since those diploma days...

now, two years later, and these same classmates are pulling people out of their natural group of friends and gathering everyone together tonight for another high school re-hashing... luckily, i have to work... i hate to sound like an a-hole, but in many ways the idea of a reunion is simply ridiculous to me now... why bother spend an evening with people i haven't seen in years? why bother ask what they're up to when i know i don't care? if i don't hang with them anymore, there is likely a reason... high school is a growing up stage... and it also entails growing out of a lot of things and people... i'm sure they're all still very nice and interesting and working here or there and studied in this province or that, but having this information isn't desirable to me... to an extent, i've kept close to those that made the impact and remain to be of interest...

although i value my secondary educational life and experiences, i don't want to remain that closely associated with my past... the more i think about it, the more i'm consumed with the fact that being stuck in this suburb is bad enough...
