toronto, or mississauga for that matter, doesn't drum up awkward looks or polite agreements from people who actually have no idea where i'm talking about... the whitehorse folk are well aware of what else is out there, mostly because many of them come from it and not this present territory that they call home... it isn't difficult to stumble across someone who shares stories of walking through the big city's busy streets or that had the pleasure of digging into some poutine after a night out in the bustling byward market of ottawa...
i befriended the manager of a local skate shop over montreal stories and love for music and trendy clothes by kitchen orange and snug... i didn't end up buying any of the beautiful, yet pricey hoodies or sundresses i had my eye on, but left the store with a possible bike riding bud and hook up to the local show scene...
after searching for the perfect birthday gift for my mother that would reflect my new surroundings, i pulled an ultimate canadiana move by resting for a sandwich combo at tim horton's... i traded a double-double for a chocolate milk though as the taste of spring lit up the outdoors with a +7 temperature...
suddenly, as a young man walked by the front window with a professional looking camera, i realized we were acquainted... not a new found friend or one of those people you constantly see in a small town -- and i might add there are many of those -- but a figure from my not-so-long-ago educational past... sure enough i was right and my eyes weren't fooling me as i stood in the middle of the coffee shop re-hashing carleton days and catching up on what we each were doing and if anyone else from our graduating class had made the venture up north... it was short and sweet, and entirely unexpected... a trip into whitehorse, yukon from inuvik, northwest territories had brought a face from my past into my future...
i breezed through another chapter of my second library treat, downed my milk and popped my headphones back in for the walk home... i paused on the robert campbell bridge to reflect on how far i've come, yet how close i still am to home in so many ways...
