writing criteria...

remember when you had assignments in middle school and high school and the page count was expected to be something disastrous like 5-6 pages? you would sweat in your boots just thinking about where the heck you would begin to fill that massive amount of pages... well i have never been one to dread a page count, whether it be large or small... however, since i have entered the world of journalistic writing, i have come to realize my fear lurks in the tiny, itsy-bitsy sized tasks...
my second writing assignment at FLARE was to write a small (and i mean small) piece on an ecommerce management company out of the US called eFashion Solutions... they are the geniuses behind the online stores for JLO by Jennifer Lopez, Rocawear, Baby Phat and Phat Farm, Shady Ltd. and much more... basically they are the ultimate in bringing fab urban wear to your doorstep through easy online shopping... my word count: 40-50...
does anyone realize how small that is? not half a page in good ol' wordperfect, it's literally three sentences... i'm not complaining because i expect a month into this job it's big features or bust, i'm complaining because 1. that's what i do and 2. it's really hard to translate a half hour interview with a CEO and an hour worth of research notes into three miniature sentences... have no fear - i did complete the task and just submitted it to my editor... look for it in the september 2005 issue... i promised the CEO of the company that i would not disclose the info he gave me beyond the walls of the office, so sorry! i can say that it was a super fun interview... we both used words like "hot" and "hip" and i think he even threw in a "stylin'" for good measure... small world moment: he asked me if jean machine was still alive and well here in canada... not only did we then get into a short convo about the jean juggernaut, but i also mentioned that i used to work for sunrise (co-owned by jean machine) to which he replied, "you're shittin' me!"
fashion makes the world go 'round, world go 'round, world go 'round...
