while searching through the cbc website this afternoon, i stumbled across a feature on the critically-acclaimed graphic novel, skim... the novel tells a teenage tale of sexuality and heartache, with a touch of gothic culture... i confess, i've never read it, but that's not my point...
sure enough i followed the link to the feature and found a single comment written:
"what is wrong with you guys?you put a picture up of two lesbians kissing right on your page ready for young children to view..doesnt anybody have any values anymore or are you all just desperate sexually deprived people that you feel a need to display these type of pictures.."
ummm... first of all, there are simply too many people posting ridiculous and, at times, utterly offensive comments on this and a plethora of other sites... i'm all for free speech, but do they think things over before clicking 'post'? is it too much to ask for a little intelligence? the image on the main website was not only tiny, but a graphic representation of two young women kissing... heaven forbid in 2009 we explore all shapes and sizes of love...
in my opinion, a child would likely never even surf to this site, but even that is not the point... the point is there's absolutely no harm in viewing such an image... perhaps children would be better off seeing two women kiss (in fiction or non-fiction, reality or artist rendering) than be raised by a "man" that posts such fearful banter...
our society's fear of sex is astounding and embarrassing all at once... we shame those who choose like-gender partners; we censor those who touch each other in films and television shows; we slander inappropriate billboards and music videos...
i remember a class discussion i was involved in during my third or fourth year of university -- it was a film studies class and we'd watched a somewhat sexually explicit film the evening before... almost every student wore rosy cheeks to that discussion... and all i could think (or say, for that matter) was how silly it is that we giggle, squirm about and fear sex, when don't we all go home and have it anyway?
