it's not easy being green...

there has only been one time in my life when i thought my car had been stolen... a friend and i were shopping on queen st. in toronto and parked at a meter... after cruising up to the eaton centre, i got a gut feeling that one of us hadn't locked the doors... even though that thought faded in a haze of indulgent purchases, we returned to an empty parking spot where the 1990 dodge shadow had once sat...

immediately i freaked out and was borderline hysterical... turns out it wasn't stolen though -- muchmusic shut the street down for a live appearance by the rarely remembered reality television show band, o-town... thus my car had been towed and the friendly staff at steve's music store explained how consoling confused car owners had become a weekly occurrence for them... an unbelievably long, rain-soaked walk and $90 later, my car was out of the impound lot and i was filled with a mixture of relief and anger...

this past saturday morning, although my actions were seemingly less dramatic, the reality was not... now our 1991 honda civic was plucked right from under our noses... the "piece of shit car" was taken for truly nothing more than a joyride and ditched once it got stuck in some snow... to be honest, it wasn't any more damaged than it had already been... the aftermath is simply something we were hoping to avoid -- purchasing a new set of wheels...

growing up i knew a car made life easier... i knew it was so much nicer than hiking my way from point 'a' to point 'b'... but i had absolutely no desire for the long list of responsibilities that came with it -- maintenance, gas, insurance payments, repairs, etc...

living in places like toronto and ottawa (well, maybe not ottawa right now) was easy thanks to full transit schedules and finding the perfect residence that was an enjoyable walk, or a single-digit cab ride from entertainment...

now, in a city where it routinely dips to -30 or below, transit is virtually non-existent and areas are widely enough spread, i've become one of those people that hates to survive without a wallet-draining, blood-sucking box of steel... in all honesty, i know this post has little to know direction -- other than to spout out my former and current automobile dilemmas... just consider this my declaration that regretfully, my carbon footprint has grown a few sizes too large...
