the tables have turned...

i walked to work this morning in my houndstooth fall-suitable coat and snow boots with nothing but a three-quarter sleeved dress and leggings underneath, suckas... may i remind you i live in whitehorse and it's f-ing january... no, i did not freeze my tits off, as you would like to believe... while the rest of canada is in a severe deep freeze, us yukoners are basking in the warmth of numbers that hover just above and just below that tender zero mark...

currently, according to the weather network that is on 24/7 in the office these days, it's +2 degrees celsius... the sun is casting a soft yellow glow against the smattering of clouds in the sky and a worker at the h&r block building i can see out the window is pushing snow off the roof... some sidewalks are turning to slush and some residents are relying on nothing more than fleece jackets...

at this time of year, you could almost classify this as a heat wave in the territory... our usual average temperature for january is -15 or so... so after all the days we've struggled to rise and shine in -40 weather, we're getting what we've waited for...

sure, the city will likely turn into a hazardous ice rink in the next week or so, but coming home and laughing at confused phone messages from my father asking me why toronto has "yukon weather" makes up for it... i'll admit i feel bad for those who don't expect and aren't used to the double digit chills of winter... but as one of my colleagues said on the radio today, in response to continuous "cold snap" coverage on newsworld -- "it's like torontonians think cold was just invented"...

they don't call it "the great white north" for nuthin'...
