concert goer...

years ago, being a part of the audience meant stuffing in the over-heated upstairs of the el mocambo on spadina, traipsing around the lawn of playdium in the heart of the suburb, or packing like sardines into the tiny, dim-lit big bop on queen street... we screamed in delight while friends' bands took the stage, devotedly competing for the top spot in the night's battle of the bands... usually organized by toronto-based concert group, supernova, the events became the weekend's top priority on the to-do list...

then, while writing for a local arts mag, shows featuring local talent devoured my friday nights... friends continued to front their own endeavours in the music scene and with dedication i joined in as one of many hand-stamped attendees...

last night i assumed a similar role in my new environment... little did i know how much the yukon and music fests go hand-in-hand... the summer equals outdoor showings with beer tents and wristbands... to welcome in the summer solstice and the north's continuous sunlight, the sunstroke festival lit up our friday night... it brought back memories of those days when the small shows seemed to be the most important -- when admission prices just barely reached double digits and local talents were just as thrilling as chart-toppers...

regardless of what environment you're in -- whether littered with huge stadiums ensuring a stop on the concert tour circuit, or just driven with community creativity and talent -- an evening of artistic expression is never too hard to find...
