the past 24 hours have been utterly ridiculous... a simple invite to the going away party of a CBC-er (and ball hockey member) led to some brews at 5:00 p.m. -- but resulted in one of the strangest fridays i've had since a birthday resulted in a television being thrown in toronto...
it all began at the boiler room, a quaint little pub where i was referred to as the trash-talking, trophy-toting ball hockey player from a week prior... we all laughed and fought over the scale of movies such as the departed and 300, and then argued over the concept of inmates being allowed to puff on ciggies... i introduced myself to the CBC crew... plans fell through for me to meet with my friend that shares my given name, so i figured i'd call it a night... boy, was i wrong... or should i say "b'y" (in pure east coast slang)...
we decided the next step of the evening was to stumble ourselves over to a brand new watering hole... as we walked in, we were met with murals of schooners, lighthouses, lobsters, green gables and potatoes... the bartender/owner had dragged himself from PEI to crack open the latest liquor lounge in whitehorse... his accent was strong, his jokes ruthless, his bar named "flippers" and his beverages presented in mason and baby food jars... arm wrestling took over the table and eventually led to leg wrestling and dancing for drinks... bottles of beer remained at happy hour price -- even though it was well into the bottom half of ten o'clock... and before we all began to depart, we were presented with joe's "punch" -- a seemingly deadly mixture of just about every liquor imaginable, with a splash of cranberry juice and 7-up... our constant glances at each other were to confirm that all of this was actually occurring...
each and every one of us was slightly beaten when we took to the vacant basketball court near porter creek secondary school this afternoon for ball hockey... we donned the red and white jerseys and ran our asses off for what felt like forever... i almost managed to dump three goals in, but alas came up scoreless... a few pints of ale in me and now i've retired to my homestead for some relaxation in prep for a casual drink out tonight...
the north feels a little bit warmer each day -- and the weather's not too bad either...
