in dodge...

let me just start by telling you that driving from central, alaska to fairbanks and then to whitehorse, yukon is -- well, for lack of better wording... or perhaps the best wording -- a %&#$ing long trip... we barely stopped for more than gas, coffee refills and bathroom breaks... when we made it to whitehorse, there was only time to grab about two hours of sleep (which was really one for me, due to insomnia kicking in)... then we were back on the road to dawson at 5:00 a.m. sharp...

i nodded off from time to time in the passenger seat, but was woken up by my companion's constant chatter... it wasn't a bad thing, but i was starting to forget what sleeping felt like... we cruised across the empty highway as the sun rose behind us... once we'd made it to stewart crossing, i took the driver's seat and followed the curves and turns until the klondike city was in sight...

upon arrival i grabbed a cup of coffee and knocked out another article for the website... everyone was quick to comment on how i looked tired -- i love when people tell you the obvious... so i was off to my room at bombay peggy's for a couple hours of rest before the action started rolling in on front street...

my new home (the few times i do get to sleep) is in the lipstick room at peggy's... the inn was a brothel back in the day and is completely outfit like a throw back to the gold rush era... luscious reds and blacks fill the boudoir, while a claw foot bathtub is just waiting for me to toss the lace shower curtain aside and fill it up...

the first three mushers are now in to the checkpoint, which meant a crowd has basically come and gone at this point... once again i'm reminded of the amount of endurance involved in this race after seeing the dogs and mushers come in with a solid layer of frost on their faces... then i was running off to update it all on the facebook page... we'd affectionately called it "feeding the baby" as the social network site seems to be ruling our lives now...

it was bustling here at the visitor's centre until about 9:30 and now it's slowed down as the next competitor isn't expected until about 1:00 a.m. or so... although sleep has still been few hours and far between, i'm debating heading to peggy's for an espresso martini, rather than the comforts of my room...
