so where do you go out for dinner in pelly crossing? good question... how about the gas station -- one bag of beef jerky, one microwavable chili, one bottle of gatorade = one terrible meal that i will likely regret later...
now the race has reached this weird point where everyone is split up... when they get to dawson they have to take a 36 hour mandatory break... and seeing as they're all coming in at different points by then, it cements the concept that there are now front runners, the middle crowd and the back of the pack...
this morning i had the pleasure of waking up later -- which meant 7:30 -- but i'd had a fabulous sleep that consisted of more than 5 straight hours... shortly after i awoke and was getting to work on the day's press release, my cell phone rang -- finally a musher had scratched... i shouldn't make that sound like a good thing, but according to past race results, the longest period of time before a musher scratched was 2 days... we're on day 8 at this point... something was bound to give...
i rushed down to the visitor's centre in dawson to get the scoop and tell the media all about it... then i rushed back to peggy's for a shower, to pack and then hit the road to pelly crossing...
in the car on the way there the conversation turned to a variety of interesting topics... religion had to be the most compelling, as i was outnumbered in my thoughts that there isn't a higher being, just science... i wasn't one to judge, as i'm a firm believer of "to each, their own"... but i did have a couple of "hmmm..." moments as i tried to wrap my head around my companions' stances...
at pelly the sun was shining and incredibly warm... it was refreshing and lovely... alas, i spent the next few hours (and obviously continue to now) in front of my laptop, typing away to get a few stories wrapped for the website... as for tonight? you know, staying up late waiting for mushers to come in, sleeping on a community centre floor for a bit, and polishing off this tasty bag of beef jerky... c'mon, you're jealous...
