world of difference...

now that i've had my first two days at descant, i've realized that the huge conglomerate world of fashion mags and the small, indie world of literary mags are just as different as i thought they'd be...

with descant's book ball looming, a brief topic of conversation on monday was concerning what to wear to the event... at FLARE, conversations like these led to designer names flaunted and guilty budgeting for over-priced shoes... or it involved my past editor having his suit re-tailored three times in order to attain perfection... however, with the eccentric hippy-chic lifestyle of the literary crowd, there were groans at even the thought of having to shell out more than a cool $20 bill for a new frock... "can't i wear pants?" was a common refrain... "i never buy outfits, why would i start now?" was another frequent grumble...

meanwhile i sat tight in front of the glow of my mac, attempting to hide the "i love clothes" look that had come across my face and to put the daydreams of shopping out of my head... i'd like to think i fooled them all, as i tucked my trendy black urban outfitters ballet flats under my desk and pretended to laugh along at the absurdity of fashion...
