my first concert ever was a huge mass of people and artists that goes by the name of edgefest... i went year upon years ago, when i mother earth still had edwin at the reins... back then it was still at molson park in barrie and not only was the stage bumpin' with act after act, but there were booths of merch and other surprises aplenty... bought my first pair of mod robes there -- beige with a black buckle...
so needless to say, early on i discovered my love for outdoor shows... something about being in the sun all day, basking in both the tanning weather and the blaring music that just seemed to go hand-in-hand to me... so now i've gone from bigger and better, to smaller and indie with the olympic island shows each year... this year's line up featured raising the fawn, j. mascis from dinosaur jr., feist, bloc party and broken social scene...
in a few words: feist - sound problems as usual, a bit strange, likely hopped up on something, satisfying... bloc party - impressive, definite highlight of the show, intense vocals, hot... broken social scene - no need to drown out the audience with 14 minute long renditions of your already 7 epic minute long songs, decent guest appearances, pretty much the same old...
verdict: meh... wasn't the best of times, wasn't the worst of times... still taking top spot was the olympic island show from two years ago, which featured buck 65, dfa 1979, arcade fire, the constantines, bss, the stills, sam roberts and sloan (and possibly a few i'm forgetting)...
in all honesty, i would have traded this whole island show for a taste of what's going to rock ottawa's socks for the blues fest... it's the only time of year when toronto can be jealous of what the capital has in store...
