i felt like some solo time on sunday, so i decided to wander around munich alone... i took the s-bahn to a place called marienplatz... there i gazed up at gorgeous clock towers, wander through cobblestone streets lined with statues and historic buildings... the shops were all closed for the day, but that didn´t stop me from indulging in a bit of window shopping... i stumbled across a street that was shut down for an impromptu biergarden... a traditional band played while everyone feasted in the afternoon sunshine...
next i got back on the s-bahn and was torn as to what my next move would be... a german man began speaking to me at one of the stations, but i couldn´t understand a word... i told him this, but he kept going trying to get me to figure it out... he uttered the word "dachau" a few times and i was sold that this would be the best plan -- so i changed my direction and was en route to dachau concentration camp memorial site in minutes...
long one story buildings lined a huge field... there was such a sombre atmosphere to the place once i walked through the large black iron gates and to be honest, i wasn´t 100 percent sure what i was in for... i wandered through room after room, learning about the progressive destructive nature of this place... the torture, the pure evil that once existed between the very walls of where i stood and it was heavy... more than heavy... i found myself tearing up as i walked through the barracks...
such an intense afternoon meant i needed a lighthearted evening... therefore, in keeping with my solo day, i took myself to a movie... i picked up some currywurst on my way to the u-bahn and then plunked down in a wonderfully comfortable cushioned seat in a beautiful theatre for a showing of sex and the city 2... worth every penny...
when i returned to the hostel i found my aussie friends calling out to me in the bar... they told me that they had actually tried googling my name to find out just how famous i was... it was both hilarious and extremely flattering until i told them that i did not in fact have a wikipedia page and they were disappointed... we shared some jager bombs, pints and conversation and then after another wonderful night, it was time for rest... i ended up booking my room for another night to explore munich for one more day, then on to verona and venice on june 1...
