you live in a place for long enough and you think you know it... you think you've figured out all you need to... especially when that place is whitehorse, yukon...
you told yourself that you'd probably only stay for a year and test the waters, then move on to "real" life, or something like that... so you establish friendships and you make yourself comfortable and you're done...
if i reflect on each year i've spent living here, i notice that each one has a very different ring to it... and while some of the same faces have lingered from year to year, even the friendships have changed... the crowd i once spent just about every day with is no longer the company i keep now...
in a small town you tend to think you've met everyone -- although everyone in whitehorse knows that ain't true... it's actually quite easy to walk into a coffee shop, bar or, um -- well, those are the only places i really walk into -- the point is, you can be anonymous up here, sometimes... it's harder to come by than it is in the big city, but it is possible... and it makes you realize that there are so many people that you've never met... or never really gotten to know...
recently i've surrounded myself with some new people... i took a leap and decided to figure how new people could contribute to a life i thought was already determined here... and it feels good... really good... perhaps it's because it is fresh and it is like that beginning of the relationship stage when everything is so wonderful... or perhaps it is genuinely because we love the thought of hanging out...
whatever it is doesn't really matter... but it is incredible how suddenly your surroundings can feel so very different -- like breathing new life into something you thought you had pegged...
