to be or not to be... anonymous...

routinely i head down to one of the local coffee shops in downtown whitehorse and plunk my silver travel mug on the counter... it's gotten to the point now where i don't have to say anything -- i pass over the mug and $2.22 and within minutes i'm adding cream and sugar to my americano...

as i walk back to the office -- similarly to the walk there -- there are a series of hellos and smiles exchanged with anyone from friends to acquaintances... this is not a proclamation to say i'm a "woman-about-town" so much as it is an identification that life in a small community is vastly different than the hustle and bustle of larger spaces...

in toronto, everyday was met with unfamiliar faces for the most part... even though there were the odd "small world" run-ins, usually city life was a lot more anonymous... it was easy to sit in a coffee shop without being interrupted by a neighbour, colleague or friend...

often times it feels like the epitome of comfort -- "where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came..." -- but other times it feels like you're living under the watchful eye of CCTV or something... suddenly there's a careful line to walk between public and private... even boarding an airplane is like a reunion with the audience members you sat near at the theatre the night previous...

as much as i am a social person, i tend to miss the days of wandering through the city, music pumping through my headphones, window shopping, rifling through magazines, snapping photographs and being in complete and utter solitude...
