transformation...

suffering from a lousy night of sleep, i awoke on saturday with nothing but laziness on my mind... but an advertised call for hair models that morning intrigued me -- with minutes to spare i left dirty dishes in the sink and went to see if i'd be one of the chosen few...

having a colour technician step-sister has led me to change my tresses on more than one occasion... cuts and colours have never been a frightening concept -- but i've had my regular parameters... two black-clad stylists from vancouver stood in front of us (a crowd of more than 30) giving forewarning that should we be chosen, bright pinks, purples, greens, blues and asymmetrical crops were their focus...

some quickly were weeded out, declining the ability to embrace the possibilities of a crazy coif... i, on the other hand, stood about 90% confident that i could rock florescent pink if need be...

12 of us remained and about 9 hours later i was released for the night... luckily a last minute change led to less pink and more "sorbet" tones... oranges, peaches, impressive blonde hues and a base of copper... that 10% of uneasiness was calmed...

the next day was another long one, filled with sitting around, reading magazines, getting shampooed, blow-dried and straight ironed... precision cuts created structure at the nape of my neck and throughout the body of the back of my head of hair, but the front was still mainly shapeless and long... this was my pre-cut -- the rest was to be snipped on stage in front of a sold-out crowd of over 200 people...

fast-forward to the big event... all models donning black head-to-toe... i wait impatiently in a hotel room to descend onto the stage... although i have an idea of the outcome, i really have no clue as to what i'll emerge from it looking like... the bright lights are blinding as i take the stage holding the hand of my trusty stylist... the first cut feels like a big one -- no mirror to guide me through leads to a slight adrenaline burst... hair flies into the beam of stage lights and falls on to the floor below me... a lot of hair... the shaping of my bangs leaves abandoned locks clinging to my glossed lips...

15 minutes and i'm done... i'm brushed off, strike a few poses and directed to the back of the stage to show it off... it's a painstaking 30 minutes before i even lay eyes on my new 'do... under the harsh lights of a hotel room bathroom i examine my new self -- a shadow of what i'd walked in the place looking like... and although it was a chance to take, in this case, i think a little change did me good...
