you know how sometimes you read those stories in the news that touch your heart, the sad ones where people were doing something completely ordinary and then something completely out of the ordinary happens? you always sort of sit back and think for a minute about the people that it happened to... how they must feel... what they must be thinking... who they must be missing... well there was an avalanche in calgary this past weekend... two canadian couples fell under its wrath... two of the four skiiers were killed instantly, one left in critical condition and another survived the ordeal... the woman left in critical condition died a day or so later...
i found out today that this story, that i read on cbc.ca and had discussed only days ago in my journalism class, hits closer to home than i thought... two of the three people that tragically died are my friend's parents...
i don't know him that well, he's more of a friend of a friend and one of those fun people you always say "hi" to at the bar and share a pint with... when i found out i was stunned... literally, i didn't know what to say or how to react... i can't imagine... one phone call, one minute, his whole life changed forever... no goodbyes, no last chances, nothing...
losing two parents in an instant would ruin me... one alone would cause me to crumble... it feels like there is nothing to say, nothing to make anything better... with everything that has happened in this world (today being the 1 month anniversary of the tsunami) i can't help but be in awe of the threat that nature itself poses to humankind... why is this happening? is there any way to stop this? why are we becoming a victim of horror created out of our very own soil and water?
mom and dad... i love you
