yukon comes with a catch 22 -- it is certainly, undoubtedly a land of opportunity, which is wonderful for those who are truly up and coming in their field and looking for an "in" past the towers and lights of the city... however, this also means that people who are probably not even qualified to drive a motor vehicle, end up making some big, expensive decisions...
just the other day some friends and i were chatting in the car about the cycle of terrible advertising that has fallen upon whitehorse... yes, contrary to popular belief the booming city of about 25,000 has a few billboards around town... and they've been known now to house some of the worst, uninspired and ridiculous marketing campaigns i've ever seen...
currently there is a series of ads brought to you by the northern safety network asking where your "stupid line" is... precisely -- what the hell is a stupid line? the ads depict two different things and attempts to compare the good risk and the bad risk involved... actually, that sounds like they make more sense then they do -- basically one shows a guy white water rafting with a helmet on, and then the second picture is of two adults bike riding leisurely with no helmets... you may or may not have guessed that the latter is the "stupid risk"... another shows a kid on a skateboard flying through the air with a helmet on, while the second pic is of a guy with a chainsaw cutting wood sans protective gear... really the hilarity about the whole thing is three-fold:
1. everyone that drives by has no idea what the "stupid line" is supposed to mean
2. every "safe" picture actually looks a lot more daring than the "dangerous" one
3. the only thing stupid about the ads is that they exist
unfortunately in the early months of each new year all the yukon government departments start throwing dollar bills around... end of the fiscal year means burn up the cash or watch your next year's budget take a hit... that's the stupid line, my friends... why throw cash away on shitty, poorly planned, absurd advertising that makes no sense and is borderline offensive? the health department has fallen prey to the same monetary mistake and their current campaign is emblazoned with the words "it's free and easy" -- seriously? no one in that advertising meeting thought that might be a little off the mark when telling people about safe sexual practices?
the only satisfaction i'm left with is wondering what ridiculous billboard is next... oh, and i'm curious to know if any of the departments are hiring -- just saying, i could use the cash...
